How Facebook can help or hurt your career

4 Comments 08 July 2010

This week I did another ABC News chat.  This time I was on Money Matters talking about Facebook, how the site can hurt or help your professional life.  We recorded via Skype (from my sweltering hot basement in Toronto).  How has Facebook hurt or help you in the business world?  Let me know.

I always look to see if an applicant has a facebook page. I have ruled out many applicants by their posts and or pictures. It is said over and over but be careful what you post online. The hiring manager at that job you really want will look at your online presence and form an opinion about you. Whether that is right or wrong doesn’t matter. It will happen.

    Hello,

This is completely unrelated to the above article, but I couldn’t find any other contact info for you. Your article here

    http://ca.tech.yahoo.com/cell_phones/accessories/article/4629

contains the link http://raisehopeforcongo.com/ that should actually be http://raisehopeforcongo.org/

Can you fix it? I wouldn’t usually worry about a dead link, but this is an important issue.

    Tony

I was recently fired from my job at a Canadian Financial Institution because of my personal Face Book page. I guess they had it out for me and they were looking for reasons to let me go. I posted something on my status about hating my job and the company said that clients could see that information at any time. They fired me for not being a team player and having a negative attitude.
We think that facebook is for personal private use with our friends, we often forget that it is online and anyone can access the information. Since being fired I have made some huge lifestyle changes including selling my car.
After more than 2 months of being unemplooyed, I have yet to find another job in finance due to the current economic crisis.
I guess that getting fired was a blessing in disguise because I have recently started my own online business. Madam Creative Services offers professional creative services in Toronto and Montreal.
I recently ordered Ambers book to learn how social media can help my new business. Hopefully this is the start of a beautiful thing :-)
