Tell your mom about the Dexter serial killer email

Screenshot_3I have to write this post to save my mom (and other caring peeps) any heartache. While scrambling to pack last Thursday night for a weekend in PEI, I jumped on my computer during the late quiet hours in my house to catch up on email. I clicked on a link from a good friend of mine, a link that had no message but "This is really weird." The link led to a page with a title "Who is Amber MacArthur?

Like any savvy web person, I clicked the play button. The video, which to a sleepy me, appeared like a regular ole sensational news story from Miami about a serial killer. I guessed that it was just a raunchy coincidence that my name was associated with the sickness of it all.

Towards the end of the video, I paid a little more attention when I saw my name written on a parking garage wall in "fake blood." Following that, the personal details got a little, well, they hit a little too close to home (name, gender, age, occupation). And, I must admit, I was pretty freaked (maybe something to do with having a very open relationship with the web and being very tired).

It sunk in pretty quickly (OK, it took 10 terrifying minutes!) that "Giving your friend the Dexter treatment" is a whacked-out viral marketing campaign for a TV show (in other words, you can input any victim's name, gender, occupation, etc.). I still don't think it's very funny. I tried to explain the whole campaign to my mom and warned her to pay no attention to such an email link, but I'm afraid she now thinks the Internet is evil. I told her that TV is evil, web people wouldn't create such a thing ;).

P.S. Yeah, yeah, I know that Dexter is supposed to be a great show (heard it from a few peeps so far). I just wanted to write this quick post to get the word out that the viral marketing campaign might be too "sick" for its own good.

Did you notice the commandn sux letter in the bag I did chuckle but i could not laugh because you're a little freaked by it

Yes, I noticed it! It is funny...now...in the daytime ;).

Seems it is a viral ad for the UK.. :(

Although not as disturbing, a friend of mine sent me a video from FreakYourMind.com. It's a Chris Angel marketing tool. The thing actually calls your house with a recorded marketing message from him. Scared the crap out of me at 2am. But I must admit, it was fine playing the trick on a few people.

You've gotta admit, purely from a technical perspective, it's pretty brilliant.

Posted by: Parker | around about 1 year ago

It's brilliant by any measure, not just a technical one. These things don't have to be funny in order to work. As "sick" as the Dexter campaign might be, it still got people talking. Amber, how many people clicked on the various links to the icetruck sites?

Posted by: Amber Mac | around about 1 year ago

Technically, it is very well done! I can vouch for that 100% :).

Sick, I'll agree, but still a pretty effective way to get people talking. Oh, and congrats on being featured on Typepad's Tour of Toronto!

haha, that was really cool. I wonder if I would have been scared by it like tou did.. But i'll never know :( But thanks for the post anyway - I have already sent this to a couple of people :P

Evil is an apt description.

yeah that is wack, it could be really scary, obviously before the word has spread... i'm trying it on some friends that like the show - reminds me of blair witch - scary for anyone who saw it early.

Posted by: Alex | around about 1 year ago

It is really well done.

I agree. It's sick and in very bad taste. I don't care if it's "effective" viral marketing. We must have ethics and good judgement when we use online marketing tools. This ad campaign is by misanthropic sadists, to promote a morally ugly and indefensible show.

Nice, thanks for the warning, but I had to send it to all my friends.

Amber, I was going to say you could get Dexter out of your head with this.... http://www.stockholmthemusical.com/ ...but Amber isn't listed...and I didn't dare pick a nick name for you :-)

Thanks Amber, I sent that to a friend that I thought could deal with it, and she called Patti and I and FREAKED the F#@& OUT! She ended up laughing at it though, in the end. The way I look at it, atleast people are looking at e-mails a little closer now, which should have been happening for years.

Wow, this is freaky but awesome! Thanks for the link, new to your page but I like it! I got here looking for Dexter stuff as we talk about television and other stuff on our show Just Push Play. If you ever get a chance, please check us out and let me know what you think.

Take care of yourself, Amber. I worry about you. Remember, trust your instincts. Always.

Great post but I hope this won't sour you on the show -- it's brilliant.

Leo got one of these last week. I thought you would have seen his and been immunized against its effect.

You thought this was real? Are you serious? I would have expected you to be smarter than this - although the campaign is impressive, the website and video are clearly hoaxes.. I got this sent to me and I wasn't convinced even for a second.. What sensationalist bullshit. Can't find anything better to cover?

Posted by: Keith | around about 1 year ago

Yeah, um, that is not funny or "positive" in any way. I must question the rationale behind characterizing it as such. At the risk of seeming as extreme as this site, I gotta say it's pretty sick...

Hi Amber, I just finished listening to the podcast with Leo and his profuse apology. It was awesome !. Anyway, given that his catchphrase song atm is Chocalate Rain, I thought he might find the following interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1DcavXVK5Y I love the Podcast keep it up, being in Sydney, there's not much of a tech content around. Cheers, Davo.
